THERAPEUTIC TECHNIQUES and PROCEDURES
We recommend therapies and care plans that are indvidualized for each patients specific needs.
Some of the evidence based procedures that we utilize include -
Spinal Manipulation or Chiropractic Adjustment
Chiropractic adjustment may also be referred to as spinal manipulation. These forms of manual therapy are performed by hand to the area of the spine to be treated. Sometimes these techniques are associated with a popping or cracking sounds similar to that heard when cracking your knuckles. Adjustments are considered very safe and generally appreciated by most patients.
The goal of chiropractic spinal manipulation is to :
- Increase joint mobility / range of motion
- Relieve pain
- Reduce muscle spasm
- Restore joint function
Flexion Distraction / Cox Therapy©
Flexion Distraction manipulation is an effective technique used to decompress the spinal joints and discs. We use a state-of-the-art specialized treatment table, the Hill AirFlex© which combines hands on treatment with direct stretching decompression traction to the spine in the area of dysfunction. Slow repetitive mobilizing and decompressive movements are used without thrusting, generally for conditions such as disc problems, lumbar stenosis and facet syndrome. Most patients find these procedures comfortable and they are tolerated quite well.
Joint Mobilization
Mobilization is another form of manual therapy performed by hand to stretch stiff joints. Mobilization serves to restore range of motion, relieve pain and reduce muscle tension. These procedures include movements usually applied as a series of deep stretches in smooth, rhythmic fashion to the articulations. Mobilizations are generally very effective and tolerated quite well by most patients.
Soft Tissue Massage / Trigger Point Therapy / Myofascial Release Technique
Trigger point therapy (TPT) generally consists of deep manual pressure applied to and held on sensitive pressure points within muscles. Also called ischemic compression massage, TPT usually reproduces discomfort in the area of a patient’s complaint and under the point or pressure. TPT may be applied in combination with stretching procedures and application of vapo-coolant spray when indicated. TPT is used to relieve painful trigger points and their characteristic referred symptoms. These procedures also can be used along with myofascial release techniques and transverse friction massage to stretch and mobilize soft tissues to effectively break up scar tissue and soft tissue restrictions.
McKenzie Technique© / Mechanical Diagonosis Therapy
The McKenzie© Method (McKenzie Technique) also called MDT / Mechanical Diagnosis Therapy utilizes carefully prescribed extension (backward bending) movements and stretching to provide relief.
A specialized exam is utilized to identify the best movements and postures to relieve the patients spine pain and related complaints. Neck pain and/or back pain sufferers can then be taught how to treat themselves and manage their own pain with appropriate individualized exercise instruction.
Spinal Core Stabilization Exercise
Spinal and core stabilization exercises and stretches are used to improve strength and control of the muscles that provide stability to the spine. Spinal stabilization exercises are recommmended based on individual patient needs to facilitate the rehab process, help restore optimum spine function and to reduce the risk of future injury, recurrence and pain.
Condition specific exercises and stretches are prescribed to individualized patient requirements and compliance.
Therapeutic Modalities
Hot moist packs or ice may be recommended for home care or used in the office to compliment care. Such modalities serve to facilitate pain relief, relax tight muscles and increase circulation in the area of complaint.
