BACK PAIN RED FLAGS


Question?
 When should I see a doctor for back related problems ?

Answer
 A visit to your health care provider is always recommended when back pain is accompanied by any of the following
Red Flags -
  • Your symptoms are severe.
  • The pain is keeping you from doing things that you normally are able to do every day.
  • The problem does not go away within a few days.
  • Recent history of fever, chills or unexplained weight loss.
  • Recent bacterial infection (e.g.,urinary tract infection);IV drug abuse; or immune suppression (from steroids, transplant, or HIV).
  • If you also have problems controlling your bowel or bladder.
  • If you feel numb in the groin or rectal area.
  • If there is leg, foot, or hip weakness.
  • Pain that worsens when supine; severe nighttime pain.
  • Major tauma, such as vehicle accident or fall from height.
  • Minor trauma or even lifting (in older or potentially osteoporotic patient)
  • Previous history of cancer.
  • Age under 20 or over 50.
